A couple of weeks ago, Tom and I took a break from all the Port Wine Day goings-on in Porto and the Douro and headed south. We had been invited to join the vindimas—wine grape harvest—at Quinta do Gradil, in Cadaval, not far from Lisbon. There are countless opportunities to experience harvest season in Portugal, but this one seemed especially fitting.

The winemaker Luis Vieira posted an update on one of his project wines–and since he was one of few winemakers on the Naked Wines project based in Portugal, we had followed his efforts. Vieira bought Quinta do Gradil 16 years ago, and like many quintas within striking distance of Lisbon, it has a colorful history. The quinta belonged to the Marques do Pombal (famous for rebuilding Lisbon after the great earthquake of 1755), which he supposedly purchased for a mistress.
